2010 population: 21 million. 96% define themselves as Christian. Romania is one of the most receptive countries towards Christianity. "A legacy of brokenness endures from the days of Ceausescu’s regime, a moral vacuum being filled with every kind of social evil. Substance abuse, prostitution, pornography, human trafficking and challenges to child welfare are widespread. Romania has one of the highest abortion rates in the world, with
three or more abortions for every child born. Poverty is still common, with widespread unemployment and economic instability, caused to a large degree by rampant and entrenched corruption. Divisions in government reduce its effectiveness; major strides forward are needed in its legal, education and health care systems as well as police and local administrations." This couple is part of a team who are in the ministry of taking the Gospel to the unreached Bayash Roma people in Croatia, Hungary, and Serbia. They are based in Hungary and work in all the three target countries using a variety of outreach models. They were directly involved in publishing the first ever book in the Bayash Roma language in 2008 and have now gone on to produce Coloring Books, Comics, Literacy materials and Bible portions in seven languages. The key elements of the use of the ETH matching fund were as follows:
- The translation of four Discipleship books into Hungarian for use in discipling Gypsies. These are the only books as far as we know that have been written specifically for Gypsies.
- The purchase of a graphics tablet for the production of Bible and literacy Coloring Books. 10 books in three languages have been produced with the tablet.
- Funding for the development of the first ever Children's Bible club system for the Gypsies this involved the development of Materials, Music, Booklets, T shirts, badges, colored crayons. This was used in three prototype clubs in the refugee camps of Montenegro and Gypsy villages in Croatia. This prototype has now been developed into a fully fledged movement that will go on to be used in 20 countries just among Gypsies.
- Purchase of sewing materials for widows and cast off women in the refugee camps of Montenegro for them to create embroidery to sell to support themselves.
- Special fund for supplying food for widows and fatherless children and special needs like the purchase of school books.
